A miniature video camera with high intensity lighting is inserted into the sewer pipe through a standard cleanout. In most cases the entire subject line can be viewed.

Q. Is a sewer inspection part of a standard home inspection?
Currently the vast majority of home inspectors do not include a sewer inspection in there full property inspection but recommend hiring a separate contractor to scope the sewer lateral.
